The practical case of Pablo and Pedro who set up a humor website I have written about this topic in the past. I think that despite having been published more than a year ago, it is still one of the most popular and most commented posts on this blog. Many people cannot believe that a website with 100,000 page views earned relatively little. Let’s continue with a new example from our friends Pablo and Pedro. They have a neighbour called Juan. Juan has a website where he copies all the funny videos and photos he finds on Facebook. With this he has managed to get more than 100,000 people to visit his website every month. Now he is going to start putting advertising on his page with Google Adsense. Unfortunately Juan does not know the relevant factors beyond the CPC that must be taken into account. Pablo and Pedro are economics students. They have a theory that if they join forces they should be able to make one plus one equal three. They think that they can easily triple Juan’s results because they consider that he is not very intelligent either. Since Juan has achieved these results despite having a limited intellect, they think that the best thing to do would be to copy his strategy and improve it. They decide to set up a humor website. What are the key factors that define a website’s revenue? After doing some research, Pablo and Pedro found a website called Viralnova . A humor website that sold for hundreds of millions of dollars. They are confident that they can achieve something similar. They realized that this website published a lot. Up to 20 pieces of content a day. They set out to do the same, although they realized that it was very difficult to reach more than 10 if they wanted to continue studying. The amount of content published on a website is only an indirect factor responsible for its income. These factors must be taken into account when monetizing a page : Number of page views and page views per visit. Main source of traffic (social networks, referrals, direct, Google, etc.). Country of origin of trafficking (Spain, Mexico, Colombia, United States, etc.). Advertising formats and web positioning. Pablo and Pedro’s actions to reach 1 million page views In a matter of 3 months, Pablo and Pedro had achieved the impossible. They had reached 1 million and 15 page views in the last 30 days. This was an unimaginable amount of traffic. They had not thought they could earn so much money in such a short time. How had he done it? To speed things up, they had invested 300 euros in Facebook Ads to buy “Likes” for their page, which had helped them create a community of more than 10,000 fans. They collaborate with a Peruvian humor Facebook page with more than 2 million fans where they pay the owner the ridiculous amount of 1 cent for every 10 clicks. They publish an average of 10.5 pieces of content (videos and photos) on their social networks (the strongest channel was Facebook, copying the strategy of their neighbor Juan and Viralnova). The time had come to put advertising on the page. Obviously they didn’t want to make it too annoying for the user so they decided to put a small banner at the bottom of the website. Adding more ads seemed too intrusive so they promised to think long term and not want to quickly multiply their income by putting more ads . Calculating the revenue of a humor website with 1 million page views The fourth month ended with little traffic growth. The lack of growth was interpreted as a warning sign by users not to overindulge in advertising. It was time to do the math. They opened their Google Adsense account and chose the “last 30 days” option. They had earned exactly 95.43 euros . Even though they had earned this money by “sleeping” (of course, while they weren’t publishing content for 6 hours a day there were also people on the web), it seemed like very little to them. Things were getting worse. Despite having stopped advertising on Facebook, they were still supporting the Facebook page that had generated 50,000 clicks for them in the previous month. This cost them 50 Euros. They had to increase the hosting capacity, now paying 10 Euros per month. The profits were reduced to 35.43 Euros . Considering that each of them invested about 90 hours in content creation each month, this gave them an hourly income of less than 0.1 Euros . What had happened? Why do Pablo and Pedro earn so little from a humor website with 1 million page views? The disappointment was enormous. Pablo had already thrown in the towel and Pedro wanted to analyze the details of what had happened before taking the same step. Both have failed to take into account some key factors. A humor website can generate more than 10 page views per visit , which significantly reduces advertising revenue because the same user is hit with advertising ten times. The 50,000 visits generated 50% of the traffic, exceeding 500,000 page views. The bad thing is that almost all of these visitors were from Peru , a market with few advertisers, so the ads are 70% less profitable than in Spain. The banner was placed at the bottom of the website where it didn’t bother anyone, but consequently no one clicked on it either. The performance of this position is very low, so it didn’t give good results. Conclusions : if you get less than 100 euros from a website with 1 million page views, you are generating less than 10 cents of CPM for your ads (in our case, the banner at the bottom of the page). A humorous website can generate a lot of traffic in a short time, but since it usually generates most of its visits from social networks, the value per impression is usually always lower than that generated, for example, through Google. In addition, this type of content requires a high update frequency. Even with several banners, with 100% traffic from Spain, it is difficult to reach 1,000 euros . In the case of Pablo and Pedro, this would have improved their hourly income to around 3 euros. I think that in fast food establishments they earn much (plus they must have a multiple of the traffic mentioned here). Perhaps the smartest way to get profit from a humor page.
